Visit Our Paradise on Earth
Ah. . .Paradise. You’ll find it in Lancaster County. While visiting the area, be sure to take a short drive to this little town, which is located just east of the Rockvale Outlets and south of Intercourse. It has always offered a little bit of everything to travelers.
A Town Takes Shape
Paradise is on Rt. 30, which began as an alternative to what is now Rt. 340, the Old Philadelphia Pike. That muddy road was less than ideal for the heavy Conestoga wagons, so a commission was formed in 1790 to survey a new route. Investors were needed to finance the project, and they were to receive dividends based on tolls charges along the new road.A revolutionary concept allowed construction on artificial beds of stone and gravel; an idea put forth by John McAdam, hence our modern use of the word macadam for paved roads. Thus, the Philadelphia-Lancaster Turnpike became the first long-distance, hard-surfaced road in America. Many people taking the long trip stopped at taverns and inns along the way, and towns grew up around them. Paradise was one such area, supposedly named by a settler because its beauty made it seem like a paradise.
