New Holland – Small Town Appeal
The northeastern part of Lancaster County, which includes New Holland, offers many intriguing small towns and attractions. Heading west from Shady Maple and Blue Ball, you’ll soon arrive in this pleasant small town, which dates to 1728.The village was given this name in 1802 to recognize the help the Dutch gave to the town’s early settlers during their flight from Europe to America. Just a short drive on Rt. 23, look for the sign for the New Holland Meats Outlet Store. This family owned business can be found at Roots Farmers Market on Tuesdays, however you can find all their great jerky treats direct from the factory here in town. The kinks or bends on Main Street today are a reflection of the typical European style of having the villagers live in a central location along both sides of the street, but each having an outlying plot of land to cultivate in addition to his trade as a craftsman. Another distinguishing feature of the town are the Sales Stables, where Amish and others go to purchase horses and livestock. As you will discover, Rts. 23 and 322 offer beautiful scenery, country towns, and unique shops for those willing to get off the beaten path!
