Blue Ball – Off the Beaten Path

The northeastern part of Lancaster County offers many intriguing small towns and attractions. Coming from Ephrata on Rt. 322, you’ll arrive in Blue Ball at the intersection with Rt. 23.

The town of Blue Ball was named for the blue ball hanging outside of the tavern stagecoach shop in the old days.

Head east on Rt. 322 about a quarter mile from the intersection of Rts. 322 and 23, and look for the water tower located at Flower and Craft Warehouse . This is worth a pilgrimage to Lancaster County just to spend a day there. It is truly an indescribable blend of home décor, silk flowers, craft supplies, garden center, and even bath and body care, and accessory departments.

Just about two minutes away heading east on Rt. 23 is the famous Shady Maple Smorgasbord. The largest smorgasbord in the county, this complex attracts locals and visitors from all over. With their huge selection of foods for breakfast, lunch, and diner, the spread is almost the length of a football field!

The salad bar alone features 40 items, and with daily features like steak, seafood, or prime rib, plus 5 other meats, 14 vegetables, and 25 desserts, you’ll never leave hungry. This is the place that gives you a wonderful good taste of Lancaster County.

Right in the Shady Maple complex you’ll find Country Home Furniture some of the finest furniture in Lancaster County.

As you will discover, Rts. 23 and 322 offer beautiful scenery, country towns, and unique shops for those willing to get off the beaten path.
